Phylogenetic position and taxonomic status of Anablepsoides, Atlantirivulus, Cynodonichthys, Laimosemion and Melanorivulus (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)

Abstract: A maximum parsimony analysis of a combined set of mitochondrial and morphological data available in the literature for 33 rivuline taxa and three outgroups confirms Rivulus as a paraphyletic assemblage. In order to adjust a generic classification to our present phylogenetic knowledge on rivuline relationships, the following taxonomic changes are proposed: Rivulus, restricted to two species endemic to Cuba, is hypothesized to be the most basal rivuline lineage, distinguished from all other non-annual rivulines by having all hypurals fused into a single plate, neural prezygapophysis of caudal vertebrae rudimentary, fourth ceratobranchial teeth absent, about 50 % of the anterior portion of the caudal fin covered by scales, four neuromasts on the anterior supraorbital series, and a black round spot with white margin on the dorsoposterior portion of the caudal peduncle in females; Anablepsoides, Atlantirivulus, Laimosemion, Melanorivulus and Cynodonichthys, previously classified as subgenera of Rivulus, are considered as valid genera; Laimosemion, including 24 species from northern South America, constitutes the sister group to a clade comprising Melanorivulus, Cynodonichthys, Anablepsoides, Atlantirivulus, and all annual rivuline genera, which is supported by a well-developed dorsal process of the urohyal and an expanded lateral articular facet of the first hypobranchial; Melanorivulus, comprising 34 species from central and northeastern South America, Cynodonichthys with 27 species from Central America and Trans-Andean South America, Anablepsoides with 42 species from northern and northeastern South America and Smaller Antilles, and Atlantirivulus, with 11 species endemic to the eastern Brazilian coastal plains are diagnosed by combinations of morphological characters, including osteology, cephalic laterosensory system and colour patterns.

Abstract: In the present study all known to date phylogenetic lineages encompassing the genus Rivulus in the large sense and its relatives, 44 in total, are benchmarked against a very long list of external characters involving global and detailed morphology of each, plus some characters related to biology, behavior and ecology, plus a few characters concerning the vertebrae counts and their structure. The parsimony analysis for these 144 characters results in 3 trees only, very much in line with the global stability of major lineages and the consensus tree produces bootstrap values that are much higher than previously released studies with morphological and osteological characters. In the resulting tree, outside Kryptolebias already separated in 2004, the genus Rivulus in the large sense is shown as a monophyletic assemblage like in the molecular study by Murphy, Thomerson & Collier (1999), with annual and non‐ annual species separated, but unlike Costa (2011) who used both morpho‐osteological and molecular combined characters. Apart from the coherence of the genus Rivulus in a large sense, the analysis newly suggests the primitive position of Millerichthys, the monophyly of major annual subclades, and the phylogenetic relationship of a clade of 3 subgenera of Rivulus, namely Prorivulus, Atlantirivulus, Melanorivulus in line with a previous palaeo‐bridge hypothesis and the minor osteological diagnostic characters that were forwarded for these 3 taxa should be deepened and re‐evaluated. Two other subunits of Rivulus, namely Anablepsoides and Oditichthys, are atypically placed in the tree, but their 2 type species were not studied by Costa (2011) and that too would need re‐evaluation. Finally several phylogenetic lineages belonging to the huge ‐and very poorly known‐ Amazon basin ends up in an unstable position and more material and characters are thought necessary for further research of this very difficult group of fish.

A new species in the family Rivulidae, 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑒, is described from a small creek, tributary of the Sipaliwini River, drainage of the Courantyne River in remote Southwestern Suriname. The new species differs from other group members by the bright gold markings on the lateral sides and the absence of the ocellus in males and females. 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑒 n. sp. also differs by the lack of a longitudinal striped pattern of red spots, typical of most congeners.

Abstract

Anablepsoides bibosi, new species, is here described from a stream in central Bolivia, in the Rio Chapare drainage, a tributary of Rio Mamoré, Amazon basin. The new species is a member of the A. limoncochae species group and differs from all the other species of this assemblage by its unique colour pattern and some morphological differences.

Abstract:

Rivulus cajariensis, new species, is described from the Cajari River drainage, lower Amazonas River basin, northern Brazil. It is hypothesized to be a member of a species assemblage endemic to the Guiana Shield area and adjacent lowlands of Venezuela, diagnosed by the presence of numerous rays in the anal and pectoral fins. The new species is distinguished from all other species of the genus, except R. igneus, by the presence of a dark greenish blue blotch on the upper portion of the opercle, and lower jaw, distal portion of anal fin and lower portion of caudal fin orange in males. Rivulus cajariensis is distinguished from R. igneus by having fewer scales in the longitudinal and transverse series and by the presence of a black round spot on the upper portion of the caudal-fin base in females.

Anablepsoides chapare, a new killifish (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes: Cynolebiidae) from central Bolivia, pp. 11-18

Abstract:

Anablepsoides chapare, new species, is here described from a small stream in the Isiboro River drainage, tributary of Mamoré River, Amazon basin, central Bolivia. It is a member of the A. limoncochae species group and differs from all the other species of this assemblage in its unique colour pattern and morphological differences. Within this assemblage A. chapare seems to be more related to A. christinae and A. luitalimae, both occurring at the Rio Madeira basin, sharing with these species the same caudal-fin shape and a similar color pattern on sides of body, but clearly differing from these species by details of coloration and the number of rays in anal, dorsal and pelvic fins, and also by distinct counts of scales on longitudinal and circumpeduncolar series. Anablepsoides chapare is the only formally described species of the genus occurring in Bolivia apart from A. beniensis, which is also known from the Rio Madeira basin, but clearly differs from this latter species, belonging to a different species group. Rivulus corpulentus Thomerson & Taphorn is herein transferred to the genus Anablepsoides and considered as belonging to the A. limoncochae species group.

𝗔𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁

𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑖 n. sp., from Amazonian Peru, near town Iquitos, is described following a since-long-known misidentification as 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 Garman, 1895, first published by Mecca (and kept by subsequent authors) following an aquarium trade import with unknown then strongly erroneous origin.

The new species is easily diagnosed from its congeners by altogether its smaller size (max. 35 mm T.L.), its very low Dorsal fin ray counts, with a not very low Anal fin ray count, its very high D/A ratio (but Dorsal fin origin, not behind Anal fin ending), its strong dichromatism (with female strongly subdued), its long (but not extremely long) and oval Caudal fin in male. It is very similar and closely related to twin-looking species, 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑜𝑠𝑢𝑠 Fels & Rham, 1982, but male live color pattern on sides is reversed from speciosus and it is distinctive by karyotype.

The status and plausible identification of 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 Garman, 1895 is discussed pending necessary live collection of topotypes.

𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑘𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑎 n. sp. from the Rio Juruá drainage, Acre state and 𝐴. 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑖 n. sp. from the Rio Tarauacá drainage, a tributary of upper the Rio Juruá, both at Acre state, Amazon basin, Brazil. 𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑘𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑎 differs from the other species of the 𝐴. 𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑜𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑒 species group by the color pattern of the males, with purplish blue body sides, presenting three interrupted red longitudinal lines, composed by small red dots. Anablepsoides fransvermeuleni Valdesalici (sv), 2015 

Anablepsoides fransvermeuleni, a new killifish from Suriname (Teleostei: Rivulidae)

Abstract:

 

Anablepsoides fransvermeuleni, new species, is described from western Suriname. It belongs to the putative A. igneus species group, whose members are restricted to the Guiana Shield, adjacent lowlands of Venezuela, and the Southern Lesser Antilles. The group currently includes: A. amphoreus, A. bondi, A. cajariensis, A. hartii, A. holmiae, A. igneus, A. immaculatus and A. waimacui. Anablepsoides fransvermeuleni is distinguished from all of these, except A. waimacui, by the presence of three interrupted stripes over a light blue background on the caudal peduncle, and a yellow distal margin on the caudal fin in males. Anablepsoides fransvermeuleni is distinguished from A. waimacui by subtruncate caudal fin and more scales in the transverse series. In addition males have red stripes on caudal peduncle and females a round black spot on the upper portion of the caudal-fin base.

Five new species of the killifish genus Anablepsoides from the Brazilian Amazon (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)

Abstract:

Two new species of the Anablepsoides urophthalmus group and three new species of the A. ornatus group, collected in the Brazilian Amazon, are described. Anablepsoides jari, new species, and A. roraima, new species, are the first records of members of the A. urophthalmus group for tributaries of the Amazonas river basin draining the Guiana Shield, but phylogenetic relationships of these species with other taxa are still uncertain. Anablepsoides jari, from the Jari river drainage, is distinguished from congeners by the colour pattern of flank and unpaired fins in males, whereas Anablepsoides roraima, from the Branco river drainage, is distinguished by the spotted pattern of flank in males. Relationships of the three new species of the A. ornatus group, Anablepsoides henschelae, new species, Anablepsoides ottonii, new species, and Anablepsoides gamae, new species, are tentatively inferred upon the basis of derived colour patterns of caudal fin in males, which are also informative to diagnose each new species. Anablepsoides ottonii seems to be closely related to A. ornatus by both sharing a pointed caudal fin in larger specimens and the presence of reddish brown spots on the dorsal portion of the caudal fin in males, whereas A. gamae and A. amanan share a colour pattern of caudal fin in males, unique among aplocheiloids, in which the dorsal portion of the fin is orangish red with dorsal margin white and narrow black outer border. Anablepsoides henschelae is considered as the sister group to all other species of its group by not sharing an apomorphic asymmetrically coloured caudal fin in males.

Anablepsoides hoetmeri, a new rivulid (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) from Rio Purus drainage, western Amazon basin, Brazil

Abstract:

Anablepsoides hoetmeri, new species, is described from middle rio Acre, a tributary of the rio Purus, Amazon drainage, Brazil. It is the first species of Anablepsoides described from that bas

 

in and the second species belonging to the Anablepsoides limoncochae species group described from Brazil. The remaining species belonging to the A. limoncochae group are mainly found in Peru, but also occur in Colombia and Ecuador. Anablepsoides hoetmeri n. sp. differs other members of the A. limoncochae group by having two longitudinal rows of 18-20 minute contact organs per row on the sides of the body, and by the coloration patterns of both males and females.

Five new species of the killifish genus Anablepsoides from the Brazilian Amazon (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)

Abstract:

Two new species of the Anablepsoides urophthalmus group and three new species of the A. ornatus group, collected in the Brazilian Amazon, are described. Anablepsoides jari, new species, and A. roraima, new species, are the first records of members of the A. urophthalmus group for tributaries of the Amazonas river basin draining the Guiana Shield, but phylogenetic relationships of these species with other taxa are still uncertain. Anablepsoides jari, from the Jari river drainage, is distinguished from congeners by the colour pattern of flank and unpaired fins in males, whereas Anablepsoides roraima, from the Branco river drainage, is distinguished by the spotted pattern of flank in males. Relationships of the three new species of the A. ornatus group, Anablepsoides henschelae, new species, Anablepsoides ottonii, new species, and Anablepsoides gamae, new species, are tentatively inferred upon the basis of derived colour patterns of caudal fin in males, which are also informative to diagnose each new species. Anablepsoides ottonii seems to be closely related to A. ornatus by both sharing a pointed caudal fin in larger specimens and the presence of reddish brown spots on the dorsal portion of the caudal fin in males, whereas A. gamae and A. amanan share a colour pattern of caudal fin in males, unique among aplocheiloids, in which the dorsal portion of the fin is orangish red with dorsal margin white and narrow black outer border. Anablepsoides henschelae is considered as the sister group to all other species of its group by not sharing an apomorphic asymmetrically coloured caudal fin in males.

Anablepsoides lineasoppilatae, a new killifish (Teleostei: Rivulidae) from south-eastern Peru

Abstract:

Anablepsoides lineasoppilatae, spec. nov. from south-eastern Peru (Departamento Puno and Madre de Dios) is here described. It is a member of the A. limoncochae group and differs from all the other species of this assemblage in its unique colour pattern. In A. lineasoppilatae, the red striped pattern on the flank reaches only to the posterior area of the pectoral fin (versus stripes reaching to the humeral region). Further it distinguished by a grey anal fin (versus yellow), by an inferior lip without any distinctive coloration (versus red inferior lip), by a dorsal fin with a low number of dots (versus transverse stripes on the middle of the dorsal fin) and by an absence of a dark margin on the dorsal fin (rather than a presence).

Anablepsoides origuelai, a new species of the Anablepsoides ornatus species group (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) from Rio Tapajós drainage, Amazon basin, Brazil

Anablepsoides origuelai, new species, is described from the Rio Tapajós drainage, near at its mouth at the Amazon River, Brazil. It was found in lentic portions of a tributary of rio Tapajós. The new species is a member of the Anablepsoides ornatus species group, which includes another five species, all occurring in the central portion of the Amazon basin. The new species differs from the other species of the Anablepsoides ornatus species group by presenting a similar orange color pattern in the dorsal and ventral portions of the caudal fin, less rays in the caudal fin and a lower number of vertebrae. The new species seems to be more closely related to A. ornatus, with which it shares a pattern of red dots distributed irregularly across the sides of the body.

Description of a new killifish of the genus Rivulus (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) from south eastern Peru

Abstract:

Rivulus parlettei spec. nov. from south eastern Peru (Departamento Cusco) is described. It is a member of the R. limoncochae group (as diagnosed by Costa, 2010) and differs from all the other species of this assemblage by its unique colour pattern and different morphology. It is distinguished from its geographic neighbour R. christinae by irregular interrupted lines of dots wider than the interspaces on body sides (versus longitudinal rows of dots forming stripes narrower than the interspaces). The infl uence of the occupation of distinct microhabitats for the radiation of the clades and the possible process of speciation of the new species are briefl y discussed.

Abstract:

Rivulus tocantinensis, new species, from the middle section of the Tocantins River drainage, and R. xinguensis, new species, from the lower Xingu River drainage, eastern Amazonas River basin, northern Brazil, are described. Both species are missing the well-defined marginal yellow stripes on the caudal fin present in adult males of all other species of the R. urophthalmus group. Rivulus tocantinensis is distinguished from all other species of the R. urophthalmus group in having wide dark orange stripes on the flank and large dark orangish brown blotches on the middle of the caudal fin in males, and the absence of dermosphenotic bone or sometimes represented by a rudimentary ossification; R. xinguensis differs from other species of that group in having fewer scales in the longitudinal series.

Abstract:

Anablepsoides urubuiensis, new species, is described from the upper Urubu river drainage, northern Brazil. It constitutes the first record of a species of the A. limoncochae group for the central Amazon region. The new species is distinguished from all other rivulines by a unique colour pattern of flank, including the presence of two red stripes distinctively widened in their posterior portion; it also differs from the other congeners of the A. limoncochae group by a combination of caudal fin oval, absence of light yellow or light orange stripe on the distal margin of the anal fin in males, and dorsal fin placed in a vertical through the base between the last two anal-fin rays or posterior to it.
